iDEAL for iGaming in the Netherlands Explained

If you run a licensed casino or sportsbook in the Netherlands and you don't offer iDEAL, most Dutch players will close the tab. iDEAL for iGaming isn't a nice-to-have in that market - it's the deposit method players expect before they'll trust you with a euro.
iDEAL handles around 70% of online payments in the Netherlands. Almost every Dutch bank account can use it, and players reach for it by reflex. For a gambling operator, that reach comes bundled with a set of rules and a few catches worth understanding before you plug it in.
This guide covers what iDEAL is, how the flow works for online casinos, why deposits can't be charged back, what it costs, and the switch to Wero that changes the branding by 2027. Facts verified as of September 2026.
What is iDEAL?
iDEAL is a Dutch account-to-account payment method that lets a customer pay a merchant directly from their bank account, authorised inside their own banking app. It launched in 2005 and is the dominant way people pay online in the Netherlands.
Term: iDEAL. Definition: A Netherlands account-to-account payment scheme that moves money straight from a payer's bank account to a merchant, authorised through the payer's own bank app rather than by card.
It isn't a card, an e-wallet, or a credit product. There's no card number, no stored balance, no line of credit. The money is a real-time bank transfer the player approves themselves. iDEAL was created by the Dutch banks and run for years by Currence; in 2023 it was acquired by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), the group behind the new pan-European wallet, Wero.
How does iDEAL work for online casinos?
The player picks iDEAL at the cashier, selects their bank, and gets sent into their own banking app to approve the payment. The deposit lands in the operator's account within seconds, and the player is back on site.
The flow looks like this:
- The player chooses iDEAL and their bank at the casino cashier.
- They're redirected to their bank's app or online banking, already logged in on mobile.
- They confirm the exact amount with their normal bank authentication - a fingerprint, Face ID or a PIN.
- The bank pushes the funds and returns a real-time confirmation to the operator.
- The balance shows in the player's casino account almost immediately.
The important part for an operator is that authentication happens inside the bank, not on your payment page. There's no card-not-present step, no separate 3-D Secure challenge to lose players on, and the strong customer authentication requirement is satisfied by the bank login itself. That's a big reason iDEAL deposits convert well. For the wider mechanics of bank-based payments, our guide to open banking for iGaming covers the same account-to-account model iDEAL sits on top of.
Is iDEAL legal for gambling in the Netherlands?
Yes. iDEAL is one of the standard, permitted payment methods for operators holding a Dutch remote gambling licence. The catch is that everything hinges on the licence, not the payment method.
The Netherlands opened its regulated online market on 1 October 2021 under the Remote Gambling Act (Wet Kansspelen op afstand, or Wet Koa), which came into force on 1 April 2021. The regulator is the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). Only KSA-licensed operators may take Dutch players, and the KSA actively pursues unlicensed sites with fines and payment blocks.
Two compliance rules shape how iDEAL deposits behave in practice:
- CRUKS. Before a player deposits, the operator must check the Central Register for the Exclusion of Games of Chance (CRUKS). Anyone on it is blocked from every licensed Dutch operator for at least six months.
- Deposit means-testing. Since October 2024, operators must run an affordability check when a player wants to deposit above set monthly limits - roughly EUR 300 a month for players aged 18 to 24 and EUR 700 for those 25 and over, based on the KSA's policy on responsible play.
None of that is specific to iDEAL, but it's where the payment flow meets the rulebook: a smooth iDEAL deposit still has to pass the CRUKS check and sit under the player's limit. Skip either and it's the licence at risk, not the payment.
Does iDEAL have chargebacks?
No. An iDEAL payment is a bank transfer the player authorises themselves, so there's no card-scheme chargeback mechanism behind it. Once the money moves, it's settled.
This is the single biggest reason gambling operators like account-to-account methods. Card deposits carry friendly-fraud risk - a player deposits, loses, then disputes the transaction with their bank. That whole category of dispute mostly disappears with iDEAL, because there's no "I didn't authorise this" route when the player approved it in their own banking app. If chargebacks are eating your card margins, our piece on cutting iGaming chargebacks puts the numbers in context.
That doesn't mean zero risk. A player can still complain to their bank, and a bank can still investigate a genuine fraud claim. But the routine dispute-and-refund cycle that drives card chargeback ratios doesn't apply. For a market as dispute-heavy as gambling, that matters.
What does iDEAL cost operators?
iDEAL is usually priced as a small fixed fee per transaction rather than a percentage of the deposit, which makes it cheap on larger deposits compared with cards. The exact figure is set by your PSP or acquirer, not by iDEAL itself.
Because the fee is typically flat, a EUR 500 iDEAL deposit costs roughly the same to process as a EUR 20 one. Card interchange and scheme fees scale with the amount, so for higher-value players iDEAL can be materially cheaper. You can model what a shift in method mix does to your effective cost with our payment cost calculator.
The trade-off is coverage. iDEAL only works for players with a Dutch bank account, so it's a Netherlands play, not a pan-European one. That's fine if the Netherlands is your market and a problem if you expected one integration to cover Europe.
iDEAL vs Trustly for iGaming: what's the difference?
Both are account-to-account methods with no chargebacks, but iDEAL is a single-country Dutch scheme reached through each bank, while Trustly is a cross-border open banking network that also powers Pay N Play registration and payouts.
The practical split:
- Reach. iDEAL is the Netherlands. Trustly spans much of Europe under one integration.
- Payouts. Trustly is built to push withdrawals back to the player. iDEAL is deposit-first, and withdrawals need a separate bank transfer (more on that below).
- Onboarding. Trustly's Pay N Play can merge registration, KYC and the first deposit into one bank login. iDEAL is a payment step, not a full onboarding layer.
My view: in the Netherlands you offer iDEAL because players demand it, and you may add Trustly or a broader open banking provider for reach and cleaner payouts. They're not really competitors in that market so much as different jobs.
Can you withdraw winnings with iDEAL?
Not directly. iDEAL is a one-directional push from the player to the merchant, so it has no native payout rail. Operators that advertise "iDEAL withdrawals" are really sending a SEPA bank transfer back to the account the player deposited from.
In practice that's fine, and it doubles as an anti-fraud control - paying winnings back to the same verified IBAN the deposit came from is a clean way to keep money on the same name. But it's worth being honest with players about timing: a returning bank transfer isn't as instant as the deposit was. For the payout side of the operation generally, see our guide to iGaming withdrawal processing.
What happens to iDEAL when Wero arrives?
iDEAL is being folded into Wero, EPI's pan-European payment wallet. The brand and flow Dutch players know are being carried over, not switched off overnight.
The timeline, per EPI and the Dutch banks: a combined iDEAL and Wero identity started appearing in 2026, the first Wero-based payments went live on 31 March 2026, and iDEAL is due to be fully phased into Wero by the end of 2027. According to ABN AMRO, the customer experience stays broadly the same while the plumbing shifts underneath.
For operators, the action is on the provider side: make sure whoever handles your iDEAL traffic is on the Wero migration path so nothing breaks when the underlying scheme changes. If you're reviewing providers now, the iGamingPayments.ai directory lists PSPs by region and method, and the payments glossary defines the surrounding terms.
Key Takeaways
- iDEAL is the default deposit method for Dutch players - around 70% of online payments in the Netherlands - so licensed operators can't skip it
- It's an account-to-account bank transfer authorised in the player's own banking app, which satisfies strong customer authentication with no separate 3-D Secure step
- iDEAL deposits carry no card-scheme chargebacks, which removes most friendly-fraud disputes
- Only KSA-licensed operators may offer it to Dutch players, and every deposit still has to clear the CRUKS check and the player's affordability limit
- iDEAL has no native payout rail - withdrawals go back as a SEPA transfer to the same account
- iDEAL is being merged into EPI's Wero wallet, with full phase-in due by the end of 2027
Frequently asked questions
Can I use iDEAL at any online casino?
Only at casinos that offer it, and for Dutch players that should mean a KSA-licensed operator. iDEAL works with almost every Dutch bank account, but you still need an operator that's integrated it and holds a Dutch remote gambling licence to take your play legally.
What happens if I try to deposit above my limit with iDEAL?
The operator will stop or question the deposit. Since October 2024, Dutch licensees must run an affordability check when a player wants to go above the monthly limits - about EUR 300 for players aged 18 to 24 and EUR 700 for those 25 and over - regardless of which payment method is used.
Is iDEAL safe for gambling deposits?
Yes. You authorise each payment inside your own bank's app with your normal security, so there's no card data on the casino page and no stored balance to lose. The main risk isn't iDEAL itself but making sure the operator is KSA-licensed.
Does iDEAL charge players a fee?
Generally not. iDEAL payments are usually free for the player at the point of use, the same as any bank transfer. The transaction fee sits on the merchant side and is set by the operator's payment provider.
Why can't I get an iDEAL withdrawal instantly?
Because iDEAL only pushes money from you to the merchant, it can't push winnings back. A payout labelled as iDEAL is really a SEPA bank transfer to the account you deposited from, and that return leg is slower than the deposit was.
Will iDEAL still exist after Wero launches?
The iDEAL brand is being carried into Wero rather than dropped abruptly. Wero payments began on 31 March 2026, a combined identity is rolling out, and iDEAL is due to be fully absorbed into Wero by the end of 2027. For players the flow stays familiar.
Does iDEAL work outside the Netherlands?
Not for players without a Dutch bank account. iDEAL is a domestic Dutch scheme, so it's a Netherlands-only method today. Wero is the route to wider European coverage over the next few years.
